In one paragraph

Datamap is a live map of surveillance infrastructure and energy grid data across the United States. It aggregates public records — ALPR camera locations, utility grid topology, federal contract awards, and county parcel data — into a single searchable view. It exists because the public pays for surveillance infrastructure and has almost no way to see where it is, who operates it, or what it cost. Datamap makes that visible.

The angle

·Cities and counties across the US are deploying surveillance cameras using federal grants and local budgets, often without public debate. Datamap shows where the cameras are.
·Flock Safety, the largest ALPR vendor, recently demanded a public map of its own devices be taken down. Datamap exists so that map cannot be removed from a single point of failure.
·The energy grid layer shows utility infrastructure alongside surveillance data, because the same physical footprint supports both — substations, fiber corridors, data centers.

Methodology

All data is either:

Fetched live from a public API or REST endpoint at page load, or
Bundled as a cached snapshot when the source is not reliably available in a browser. Every cached layer is timestamped and marked as cached in the UI.

Datamap does not scrape private data. It does not access any system that requires authentication. Every pin on the map originates from a source that is already published publicly and attributed in the source table above.

What datamap does not do

·Does not track individuals.
·Does not identify license plates.
·Does not access any private or authenticated system.
·Does not interfere with any device.
·Does not publish home addresses of individual operators or field staff.

The focus is on institutions, contracts, and public money — not on individuals. This line is intentional.
